I’ve long had an interest in the idea of a “Cabinet of Curiosities,” an idea that has its roots in Europe in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, a time in history when people aspired to learn more about the world around them and collected unusual things. I don’t technically have a cabinet of curiosities myself, but you can see some examples of what they look like below.
While I have a small personal collection of “curious objects,” more often I am seeing things out in the world, in antique stores or other locations, where I don’t necessarily buy the object, but rather photograph it in the hope of learning more about it. Of course what shows up here is subjectively “curious,” some of these things that I decide to share might be well-known in other circles, but there was something about them that grabbed my interest and appreciation. So to share this collection of interesting items, I decided to create “vMOCO,” a Virtual Museum of Curious Objects, presented in a series of blog posts that highlight and present research on the various objects.
